Meet the Team #5
Get to know your Nooks booksellers
Once a month or so, we’re introducing you to members of the Nooks bookselling team answering some fun, bookish questions. Previously, we’ve featured Torie, Lauren, Lisa, and Maile. This week, it’s Shawn’s turn!
How long have you been working at Nooks, and how are you connected to the shop?
I’ve been at Nooks ever since Emma so graciously passed the reins over to Maile and me. And now it’s our seventh child.
What are your favorite or go-to genres?
Literary Fiction
When not at Nooks, how do you spend your time?
When I’m not at Nooks, I’m thinking about Nooks, or ordering books for Nooks, or… But also reading as much as possible and trying to find time to fit in writing again.
What is one book you can’t stop recommending?
I’m always recommending David James Duncan’s The Brothers K. I read it 30 years ago and can’t stop talking about it!
What’s the last book you DNF’ed (or wanted to)?
Well, I still plan on finishing it…some day…but I’d have to say Tom’s Crossing by Mark Danielewski. I think it’s around 1200 pages long, a wonderful story, but very meandering.
What book made you fall in love with reading?
Someone read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to me when I was around 6 and reading became my favorite thing ever.
What’s the best part of working at a bookstore?
Recommending a book to someone when I KNOW they’ll love it.
What’s the worst part of working at a bookstore?
Paperwork.
This or that
Re-read or read once?
Read once
Hardcover or paperback?
Hardcover
Bookmark or anything but a bookmark?
Anything but. Mostly nice little notes from my kids that I find from time to time.
One book at a time or several books at a time?
I fluctuate between reading one and then grabbing another when that one is taking too long.
Audiobooks are reading or audiobooks are cheating?
Neither! I mean, they’re definitely NOT cheating. But don’t you read with your eyes? Anyway, I definitely count them towards books read. And I love listening to a good audio book.
