August and September are strange month for us, as we embark on fair season for five weeks, running concessions at a stand at the Maryland State Fair and the Frederick Fair. The kids head back to school and activities. Our college kids leave home. The days are normally getting cooler and darker, and there’s a sense of new beginnings.
But now those late summer days are behind us and here at Nooks we’re heading into the fall. Maile and I are back in the shop most of the time, and there’s an air of expectation, of hope.
Along with that comes an increase in the fun events we’ll be doing! Returning to Nooks this fall as she releases a new book is author
—her upcoming book, Everything is a Story, “reveals how narratives function like living seeds, taking root in our consciousness and growing from acorns into mature oak trees that define who we are.”That sounds lovely, doesn’t it? This book will help you:
· learn to identify toxic narratives that perpetuate division and replace them with stories of compassion and wholeness;
· discover how Indigenous storytelling wisdom can transform modern approaches to healing and community building;
· develop skills for examining family stories, religious beliefs, and cultural myths with discernment; and
· explore how to pass meaningful stories to future generations.
Here’s an excerpt from Chapter One:
Who first told you the story of yourself? Who decided how you’d be raised,
where, why, and when?Who made you think certain things of
that holy body, exceptional mind, and thoughtful heart?Who held the power to shape your everything?
On what day did you decide to revisit the story?
At what time did you discover that it was all too much
and not enough?Where were you when you promised to love that
body, mind, and heart again?Who helped you find
your way home to yourself?Who gave you pen and paper to write the story
as it always should have been?Tell me the story again,
and we will grieve what’s been lost and rewrite the next chapter,
and the next, and the next,
and every moment that follows, for ourselves, for each other,
and for every story
yet to be imagined.(Content taken from Everything is a Story by Kaitlin B. Curtice, ©2025. Used by permission of Brazos Press.)
